Meximutt's First Christmas

rescue vanJust last month, in early December, we headed south of the border to round up our final group of Meximutts for the year 2007. The scruffy crew had been getting ready for a couple of months in Juarez, where most had been saved from death row at the local animal control center. Each sweet pooch had undergone sterilization surgery, vaccinations, deworming and countless baths before loading up in our rescue van for the long trip back to California.
Perhaps it was the nostalgia of the holiday season, but I found myself a bit more sensitive than usual to the radiance and beauty of each individual dog and by the end of the 24-hour road trip I'd fallen madly in love with every single one.
Allow me to introduce a few of the holiday hounds - all of whom have since been adopted and got to spend their very first Christmas warm, safe, and loved here in northern California

Renzo

rescue dog

Sweet Renzo (now named "Buddy) is a blind poodle with more heart and pep than any full sighted dog I've ever met! Renzo does not let his disability slow him down for one milisecond and is eager to play, romp, and run around whenever he gets a chance. Extremely affectionate and awfully cute, this little poodle mix was nothing but filth and matts when first rescued in Juarez, Mexico. He has since ended up finding a home with a lovely retired couple who report that he sleeps between them in bed every night and even has his own buggy that he gets pushed around in when he gets tired on his long walks each day! Talk about a wags to riches holiday tale!

Cora

rescue dogCora is short for Corazon, which means heart in Spanish. What an appropriate name for this spectacular dog. Cora had been in a foster home with Renzo, a blind poodle rescued at the same time, and she had appointed herself as his personal guardian. Cora watched over Renzo carefully and made sure anyone who approached him had good intentions and was gentle. She played very gently with him and seemed almost overly concerned with where he was going and what he was doing at all times.  Cora was a terrific pal and she won us all over with her generous spirt - not to mention that irresistible face!

Tachito

internationa dog rescueAhhh Tachito. To know him is to love him instantly and completely. If he doesn't melt you with those longing, deep brown eyes, he is sure to charm you with his submissive little tail wag and snaggle tooth smile.
Tachito had been tragically attacked at the animal control center where he was rescued from - leaving him with severe physical wounds and even more severe emotional injuries. Tachito is a sensitive guy by nature (being a Chihuahua...) and the attack left him nearly paralyzed with fear. It took him months to come out of his shell in his foster home, but slowly and surely he let down his guard and sure enough a silly, fun loving little dog began to take form.
The drive back to California began a bit rough for him. He required around the clock lap time, loads of pets, and lots of reassurance. However, by the end of the trip Tachito had become incredilby affectionate and pretty darn playful. He has since gone on to find his permanent home where he continues to blossom and flourish, far since removed from the brutal reality he was rescued from just months ago.
