THE LUCKY FOUR

CWOB Saves 4 Dogs from Certain Death in Chihuahua, Mexico

Compassion without Borders recently hosted a statewide humane euthanasia training in  the capitol city of Chihuahua, Chihuahua. While there, four dogs were selected for our international rescue program.

It is always a bitter-sweet process to pick the lucky few dogs we able to save, when every single one is so deserving. However, we try hard to focus on the happy endings we can create and are careful to rejoice in every single one!

Meet the Lucky Four:

Save a Life

Alma

-Written by Christi Payne Camblor, CWOB Cofounder

Alma rescue dog from the antirrabico of chihuahuaAlma was a sight so tragic that just one quick glance at her would have broken the heart of anyone with a pulse and an ounce of compassion. I first laid eyes on her while scanning the animal control cages at the humane euthanasia training, trying to select a few sweet souls for our rescue.
Alma jumped up to the front of the cage and began to wag her tail as I took in every detail of her tragic condition – her emaciated frame, the bite wounds covering her body, her infected, swollen skin and goopy, reddened eyes. What struck me most about her, however, was her illogically upbeat disposition. Her body told a story of complete defeat, misery and collapse, while her eyes boasted a tale of hope, faith and resilience. And although she had clearly never benefited from even one moment of human kindness or mercy, she radiated warmth and pure, honest affection toward anyone who looked her way.
As I approached the cage, Alma kissed my hand and I knew the deal was sealed – she was coming with us. She was selected for the rescue and is now recovering in a Juarez foster home where she is getting the medical attention, nourishment, and emotional support she needs to make a full recovery.

Hershey

Rescue dog from mexicoLittle Hershey, as his name implies, is so cute you just want to eat him up. His adorable stout little chocolate body is filled with a sweet little perky personality that makes him stand out in a crowd – which is exactly what he did to catch our attention.
Hershey was in a cage with about 20 other dogs and could have easily remained hidden had it not been for his tenacious character and the coy look in his eyes.  He made sure to get right up to the front of the cage door and make eye contact with any and everyone who came within 100 feet. He would then cock his head, press his face against the wire mesh, and beg you to come give him a quick pet.
Hershey was as charming out of the cage as he was in it and we were delighted to be able to save his life.

Adolfo

Adolfo rescue dog from chihuahua mexicoAdolfo’s good looks were hidden behind the mountains and mountains of matts that covered his body. He was tangled from head to toe, not to mention very thin, and absolutely filthy. That didn’t stop us from scooping him up and popping him in the car to return home with us, where he proceeded to charm every single passenger by the time we made it back to Juarez.

Adolfo was shaved down immediately, revealing a surprisingly handsome little character, and is now receiving basic medical care and attention while he awaits his trip to California with us this coming March.

Licha

Licha rescue from the antirrabico of chuhuahuaLicha was found pressing her nose out from under the cage door. She was stinky, unkempt, and had dozens of ticks all over her little body. We wrapped her in a blanket, reassured her, and brought her back to the safety of a local foster home in Juarez where she continues to recover and recuperate.
Licha will travel back to California during our next trip this  March.
