Rescuing lives by the truckload!

Carmelita helpin in the international dog rescueWe have saved over 35 lives in the past few months! All of whom would have been euthanized at the local animal control center in Juarez,

We select animals who are about to be euthanized, quarantine, vaccinate and deworm them, and then load them up and drive them to Northern California where they are adopted out thanks to various partner organizations and shelters.

Over the past five years , we have been able to save nearly 500 lives .

The journey from Juarez to the Sacramento valley in California, with sometimes as many as 24 dogs per trip, is always exhausting, never boring, and invariably unforgettable. We are continually impressed by how incredibly well the dogs fare during the 20+ hour adventure. They hardly ever whine, never complain, and are always more grateful than tired at the end of the trip.

Meet some of the individuals who have been saved:

Valentina:

Dog rescue - Mexico Ciudad JuarezCWOB was contacted by a kind hearted woman in Juarez who saw Valentina running the streets with a horrific leg injury which had left one of her front legs severed and the bone exposed. We let her know that if she could safely get Valentina to a vet, we would help find her a home.

Valentina was an absolute love from the moment she was rescued off the street. She greeted her rescuer with soft kisses and a tail wag and even during the two surgeries she underwent to amputate the injured legs and all of the severely injured toes on the other forepaw, she never once lost her sweet disposition.

Once she healed from the surgeries we were able to bring her back to Northern California where she was cared for by a CAPE foster family who continue to nurture her both physically and emotionally while they find her the perfect home.

Fergie:

Fergi International dog rescueFergie’s tale from rough beginnings to the padded, plush reality she finds herself in today involves loads of guardian angels, good luck, and a very determined little spirit. Fergie was found in an animal control center in Juarez where she was slated to be euthanized. Matted and frightened, she also suffered from a severe leg injury that caused her to drag her front leg so severely she had scabs and wounds along the length of it. A local volunteer from Aprodea took her to her home, hoping she could be rescued by CWOB and get the medical attention she needed for her leg.

Once Fergie made it back to the US, Center for Animal Protection and Education graciously took her in and got her the surgery she needed to get her leg amputated, thanks to the generous free services of Dr.Don Conkling (who has another rescued pooch from Mexico!).

Fergie’s foster mom showered her with love before and after the surgery and reports that she transformed completely from a mistrusting, unsure little dog to an absolutely delightful companion who is doing much better on three legs than she was before with the injured limb weighing her down.

Fergie has been adopted into a fantastic home where they absolutely adore her and recognize how far she has come.

Sean:

Dog Rescue from Ciudad Juarez MexicoSean couldn’t be much cuter if he tried. That scruffy face, that adorably sweet disposition. We found Sean as an unwanted stray months ago in a small town where we were doing a spay camp. Matted and undernourished, we decided to rescue him, but asked local volunteers in Juarez, Mexico to keep him foster for a while to let him become more physically strong and to ensure he had adequate vaccinations, etc.

We hardly recognized him when we returned to bring him home. He had nearly doubled in size and was an absolute doll!

Sean was adopted out via the Peninsula Humane Society and is now in a loving home in Davis, California with a family that adores him.

Luci:

International Dog Rescue - Luci Rescue dogSweet little Luci , weighing in at a whopping 6 pounds, is a young dog with the rest of her life ahead of her. Thanks to the kindness of a vet student, Inez del Pino, who was volunteering at our spay camp last March, Luci was rescued from an abusive situation and CWOB was able to bring her back to California where, thanks to Inez and Small Dog Rescue, Luci has found her way into a superb, loving home where she will be adored and protected for the rest of her long life!

Galleta:

Galleta- International Dog RescueIf Galleta (Cooke in Spanish) was any more adorable we just wouldn’t have been able to stand it. Galleta was rescued from being euthanized at the local animal control center in Juarez. However, after she was rescued she got very sick and was found to have an infected uterus.

We arrived in Juarez as she recovering from her surgery, and found Galleta depressed and still quite ill with a very high fever and covered in matts. We decided to take Galleta with us to the hotel where we were staying for the week (we were in town doing our latest spay camp).

We instantly fell in love with Galleta and she with us. She slept beside us, cuddled up very closely each night and waited for us patiently all day while we worked at the clinic.
By the end of the week, Galleta was looking and feeling 100% better and had blossomed into the most lovely, sweet, well behaved little dog.
She was placed in a loving home by CAPE and she is continuing to thrive today.

The Ositas

Dog rescue from Ciudad Juarez MexicoOsita was pulled from the euthanasia table when she was already several weeks pregnant. Her owners had left her at the animal control center because they didn’t want to deal with another litter. She was rescued by a fantastic local volunteer who fostered her throughout her pregnancy and during the first three month’s of the puppies lives. The entire family then made the trip up to Northern California where they have all now been successfully adopted out into wonderful, individual homes.
