What a Difference a Week Makes
Compassion without Borders recently headed down to Chihuahua, Mexico to host a week-long free spay and neuter clinic. 20 dynamite US volunteers and many more local ones, ranging in expertise from veterinarians to just plain old animal lovers, pulled together to make this most recent spay camp our most successful to date!
The clinic was held in a very impoverished neighborhood on the outskirts of Chihuahua, “Vista Cerro Grande”, at a local elementary school. For nearly every animal serviced at our clinic, this was their first and likely only chance to be examined and treated by a veterinarian, as the families that live in the region simply cannot afford health services for their animals.
So what exactly did we do?
Check out what CWOB accomplished in just one week’s time:
•221 animals were sterilized, vaccinated, de-wormed, given flea and tick control, collars and ID Tags
•Another several dozen animals from the community were given free medical attention ranging from basic vaccinations and health checks to more intensive medical management for chronic ongoing problems.
•Local TV and print media covered the clinic extensively, providing a fantastic opportunity for us to educate the public and promote our message of humane reform and spay/neuter.
•Community donations of toys, school supplies, clothing, blankets, and other miscellaneous items were provided to hundreds children and adults in the area that brought their animals to the clinic
•Local government officials and veterinarians visited the clinic and initiated an ongoing partnership with CWOB to improve and increase spay/neuter efforts in the region
We plan to continue our efforts locally via a government run clinic in the city that currently offers a handful of free spay and neuter surgeries, but in very poor conditions without basic medical supplies and equipment. The veterinarians at the clinic trained with one of our Mexican surgeons prior to the spay camp and came and observed the US surgeons closely during our clinic.
Our goal is to help equip their clinic with the instrumentation and surgical supplies necessary to provide safe surgeries and to work with the local government on expanding their services and increasing their numbers and outreach efforts in meaningful ways.
This latest spay and neuter project promises to be very complimentary to our other programs in the capitol of city of Chihuahua, which include Humane Euthanasia and our new “Sabias Que” humane education campaign.
